Karen Bradley: Jubilee weekend is a historic moment for us all

By Jack Lenton 1st Jun 2022

Karen Bradley: In this week's column, the Moorlands MP has discussed the Platinum Jubilee weekend and how it is being celebrated in the Moorlands.

I know that we are all looking forward to the Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark Her Majesty The Queen's 70-year reign. No other British monarch has reached this milestone and I welcome the many events that are being organised across the Moorlands such as street parties, discos, BBQs, live music, parties in the park and beacon lighting just to mention a few.

The Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend begins on Thursday 2 June with Trooping the Colour, which sees more than 1,500 soldiers and musicians, around 240 horses and the Irish Guards mascot, Turlough Mor the Irish Wolfhound, coming together for the traditional Queen's birthday parade. The many events taking place in London over the weekend will be broadcast on TV networks BBC, Sky and ITV.

This is such a historic moment for all of us and I was therefore pleased to hear that children in state-funded primary schools across the United Kingdom will receive a free commemorative book to mark the occasion.

The book tells the story of a young girl, Isabella, visiting her Great Granny Joyce who tells her about the Queen and this year's Jubilee.

In the story, Isabella goes through Great Granny Joyce's treasure box of souvenirs. These include recent and historical events across the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, inspirational people, landmark innovations and inventions, and a selection of the best art, design, and culture.

The book also includes famous quotes from the Queen, facts on the coronation ceremony, information on famous Commonwealth figures such as Nelson Mandela, notable kings and queens and a timeline of Queen Elizabeth's life.

As pupils in the Moorlands start to receive their own commemorative Jubilee book, I hope they will enjoy reading about Her Majesty the Queen's amazing life and the people and events that have shaped history over the last 70 years.
