Moorlands police have asked parents to ensure they know what their children are up to after an incident of underage drinking in Leek led to a 9-year-old boy suffering a serious hand injury.

The incident took place in Brough Park in Leek, and involved a group of teens drinking alcohol underage and smashing bottles.

The smashed bottles were the cause of the boy's injury, as he tripped and sliced his hand open on the broken glass, and had to be taken to hospital for an operation.

Police say they will now have a presence in the park following the incident.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police's Moorlands team said: "Parents do you know what your children are up to?

"This incident in Brough Park, Leek involved youths underage drinking and smashing bottles.

"This has resulted in a boy aged 9 sustaining a serious injury to his hand.

"Police will be providing a visible presence in the park."
