Two Leek schools have been named among thousands around the country to receive a chunk of Government money to run summer schools programmes.

St Edward's Church of England Academy and Churnet View Middle School will both benefit from the £200m scheme, which aims to help schools run programmes over the summer holidays.

The other Moorlands schools to benefit are James Bateman Middle School, Endon High School and Biddulph High School as well as over 2,800 more schools around the country.

The summer schools will provide a range of extra-curricular and academic catch-up activities including maths, English, sports, drama and music, with online resources also being provided for students and teachers ahead of the new school year.

The funds have been welcomed by Moorlands MP Karen Bradley, who said: "The pandemic has had a huge impact on the last school year for pupils – and I am committed to helping everyone affected catch up on lost learning and missed experiences before the start of the next academic year.

"The extra funding will help Biddulph High School, Churnet View Middle School, Endon High School, James Bateman Middle School and St Edward's Church of England Academy put on summer schools and provide vital learning opportunities for pupils – boosting pupils' learning and their confidence with extra lessons and extra-curricular activities like sports, music and drama."

Schools Minister Nick Gibb added: "It is very good to see that so many children will now have the opportunity to enjoy clubs and activities, building friendships and supporting their mental and physical health, alongside their educational progress.

"We have announced £3 billion so far to support education recovery, and are focusing now on helping children catch up ahead of the next academic year. Summer schools are an integral part of the overall effort to recover from the disruption caused by the pandemic."
