As the UK lockdown on sport lifts, Leek RUFC will be back open for rugby training at Esterchem Park, Cheddleton this week.

The Seniors and Colts sides are due to return from Tuesday March 30th, with the Girls team set to come back on Wednesday March 31st and Mini and Junior rugby teams returning on Sunday April 4th.

The club is keen to welcome back all Leek RUFC players as well as a new generation hoping to get into the game.

Chair of the senior playing section Tony Hine said: "I'm delighted that rugby is coming back this week, it's going to be a great occasion seeing everyone back and playing the game we love after such a long break.

"The end of the lockdown is particularly an opportunity for any aspiring young rugby players to get started in the sport, and we would welcome young players from the ages of 5-17 who fancy giving a news sport a try along with any senior players who wish to get involved.

"We are hoping that the long lay-off has inspired people to take up rugby, and the environment we have at this club is perfect for anyone looking to get into it."

He added: "Players and parents can rest assured that the club has strict guidelines as we come out of lockdown, ensuring that the return to rugby is as safe as possible."

This week's return marks the start of a gradual re-opening, with the outdoor bar re-opening from April 12th, each Tuesday and Thursday evening.

April 26th will provide an allowance for further rugby adaptations and by the middle of May, the club hopes to return to competitive action.

"The bar re-opening is great news, and something I'm sure we are all excited for, and if everything goes as planned, we are hoping to be playing at least intra-club games by the middle of May."

In addition, owing to the lack of Rugby this season, Leek's season has been extended into the summer, and the club plan to participate in some county Rugby 7s tournaments for seniors, colts and under 18 girls on dates to be announced.

"As a club it will be great to see all sections returning to play some form of adapted rugby, and by Mid may we hope to be able to move into the normal format of the game with plans to return to a normal league format from Sept 21st "
