A planning application seeking permission for a "flexible" use of buildings on Leek's Market Place has been approved by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council.
The council approved the plans at its latest Planning Committee meeting.
Leek Nub News reported previously how the application's "flexible" use meant the buildings could be turned into shops, restaurants, bars or cafes at any point over the next 10 years. The rest of the space will be turned into nine apartments.
The plans relate to the buildings on the corner of 1-3 Market Place and 2-4 Stockwell Street, which includes a building previously used for Tourist Information by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, the Old Fire Station and the Society bar.
Now that the plans have been granted permission, the applicant has the ability to switch between any of the above uses without the need for planning permission at any point over the next decade.
A report by the district council's planning officers noted that this kind of "flexible" application is something that may become more common in future due to uncertainty brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking at the meeting Cllr Ben Emery said the plans would add to the "vibrance" of Leek's town centre.
Cllr Mike Gledhill also praised the plans, saying it would be a "win win situation" for developers and planning officers.
Cllr Keith Flunder raised concerns about potential clashes between people living in the apartments and those enjoying any potential bar or café facilities, but overall felt that the application was positive.
While Cllr Jim Davies added that the whole of the buildings being brought back into use would help to "bring life" to the area.
Councillors voted to approve the application.
