Leek's mayor, Cllr Lyn Swindlehurst, has written in her latest column about plans to visit Leek's twinned town of Este, Italy. Read what she had to say below:

I am sure I'm not alone in having the terrible situation in Ukraine as a backdrop to my every thought, making me count my blessings as everyday issues unfold, work and family life roll on, and plans are made. 

One such plan surrounds a visit to Este in Italy where Leek Town Council Twinning Committee has a successful relationship, led by Cllr Pam Wood. Our Twinning was Initiated in 2002 to develop a sense of belonging, identity and cooperation concentrating on the two towns that each have social and cultural similarities. This isn't a formal visit as these haven't happened since the start of the pandemic, and Este has suffered in a similar way to Leek. Matt and I are making personal visit to see how these twinning relationships add value by encouraging harmonious working. The enormity of wars, which are now even more close to us, make me feel that making positive plans may seem somewhat insensitive. But by doing nothing would mean that bullies behind such monstrous atrocities win, something we should never allow to happen.

Ukraine is also pursuing an international relationship through the Copenhagen Agreement to work with its neighbouring states, whilst receiving support from many different Governments in an on-going collaborative effort. This may take some considerable time, good will and trust.

We are also working within our community to ensure we help others, locally, nationally and internationally. Often unseen and unheard, people can make a huge difference in the lives of others. I am proud to see Cllr Roy Molson taking the lead, working with volunteers to set up a collection point at Bank House for much needed supplies, required by aid workers in Ukraine. Already a large amount has been packed and despatched.

Wars – where ever they occur, are so destructive and counter productive to populations already struggling to achieve basic standards of living. We have seen how the situation in Ukraine has galvanised the need for international bodies such as the UN and The NATO Alliance to work more collaboratively, interacting at every level of government. 

Working together, no matter what our differences is possible even on a small scale in our daily lives. Such wanton destruction brings into focus the minor issues we face on a daily basis and the value of what we have. Author Tom Robbins said, 'Our similarities bring us to a common ground; our differences allow us to be fascinated by each other'.
