Leek Ukraine Group has thanked local people for their support in marking Ukraine's national Independence day last Wednesday.
The event's organiser, Cathy Fairley, also paid tribute to the hard work of guests, members and volunteers in planning and preparing the day.
Cathy explained how the group organised Leek's celebration of Ukraine's Independence Day. She said: "Bakers in Trinity Church kitchens received a donation to buy ingredients in addition to providing Ukrainian dishes themselves. Local people were fulsome in their praise of the samples of pancakes, bread, cakes and biscuits.
"The lucky bag stall proved a hit thanks to the kind donations from friends of the group, and those from the staff of Pathfinders of Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to them and their families who also helped on the day.
"The Name the Teddy competition was organised and run by two very enthusiastic young helpers. Volunteers from the group also worked tirelessly during the day, as they do at each week's meetings.
She added: "The generous support and donations of local people, groups and organisations resulted in over £659 being donated to Leek Ukraine Aid. Town Mayor, Bill Cawley, gave a very thoughtful and poignant speech to open the event. The Town Crier kept that message of support going.
"Ukrainian Food will be on offer again at the Salvation Army Autumn Fair on November 5th when the group will have a stall. Proceeds from that will go to our very kind hosts at the Church Hall on Salisbury Street where volunteers continue to support guests and hosts."
We reported previously how members of the local Ukrainian support group shared their experiences of offering accommodation to those who were forced out of their homes by the Russian invasion.
The group meets every Saturday from 10am - 12pm at the Salvation Army building on Salisbury Street. Anyone is welcome to come along if you are a Ukrainian guest, sponsor, or if you would just like to find out more.
