A new mayor has been elected for the 2022-23 year in Leek.

Leek Town Council held its annual mayor making meeting yesterday evening (Tuesday 17th May).

Cllr Bill Cawley was elected as mayor, taking over from Cllr Lyn Swindlehurst, who was the town's previous mayor for 2021-22.

Cllr Cawley, who was deputy mayor last year, continues the tradition observed in many councils of the previous year's deputy mayor becoming the mayor in the following year.

Following his election, a spokesperson for Leek town council said: "Cllr Bill Cawley was elected Town Mayor of Leek at the AGM on Tuesday.

"Bill's wife Cathy and daughter both attended the meeting.

"Bill says he is looking forward to the challenges for the coming year and embracing the positivity of people who have the best intentions of Leek and its citizens at heart."
