Leek: Family Fun Day postponed as Yellow Thunderstorm Warning issued for weekend

The Met Office has issued another yellow thunderstorm warning for Leek and its surrounding areas for this weekend, with the town set to be hit by storms on Saturday (21st August).

The warning is in place from 12pm - 10pm on Saturday this week, with heavy showers and thunderstorms predicted in the town throughout the day.

As a result, Leek's town centre Family Fun Day planned for tomorrow has been postponed.

A town council spokesperson said: "Due to the forecast of heavy rain and possible thunder throughout the day, the events sub committee of Leek Town Council has made the regrettable decision to postpone tomorrow's planned town centre Family Funday.

"Such weather has the potential to compromise both the safety of the performers, and the presenting of live music in an outdoors setting.

"We hope to host the event next month, on Saturday September 18th to coincide with the monthly Farmer's Market. The Saturday market is better protected and will be open as usual."

The Met Office says there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater.

They have also warned that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

The warning also comes with the advice that, where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

The warning is in place for almost all of England, stretching from Exeter to north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and into Scotland.

Forecasts have predicted showers on Sunday, before the rain dissipates for a dry week next week.
