Local causes in Leek received hundreds of pounds each when the Co-op's annual fundraising campaign reached its conclusion.

Each year Co-op stores ask local people to nominate deserving community causes to benefit from its Local Community Fund. Every time Co-op Members buy selected Co-op branded products and services, 2p for every pound spent goes into their Co-op Membership account and Co-op gives the same to support community organisations and local causes.

One of the local causes to benefit from the latest round of funding was Rotten Park Road which helps to facilitate creative writing, film and theatre workshops in Leek. They received £842 from the Co-op to fund creative writing workshops.

Patrick McConnell from Rotten Park Road told Nub News: "We received a wonderful £842 with the help of the lovely Co-op Members for our creative writing workshops, which will be taking place in the spring.

"The workshops are free for members of the community aged 12 and over (including adults) and anyone who would like to know more can email us at [email protected] to register interest. We hope the sessions will encourage more people to be creative and we hope it will also help some to develop their literacy skills. Exact dates and info are TBC and will be announced at the end of next month on our social media channels."

Rudyard Lake, the picturesque local reservoir, also received £882 from the Co-op to fund an educational history exhibit.

Ray Perry from the Rudyard Lake Trust said: "On behalf of the Rudyard Lake Trust I would like to thank all the Co-op Members who have generously contributed towards our 'Honey Lives On' project at Rudyard Lake, the support has been wonderful and is very much appreciated.

"The project will provide an important new educational facility for the lake's many visitors. Based on an ex Naval Captain's Cutter Launch built in 1942, which saw action both in the Atlantic and Arctic convoys, we intend to display via modern IT the experiences of those on board during WW2."

Representatives from Leek's local causes attended a presentation ceremony to collect their cheques and share details about their schemes.

Co-op Members help thousands of grassroots community projects through the Local Community Fund by selecting a cause to support. Since 2016 Co-op Members have raised more than £85m for over 25,000 projects.

Supporting these local causes aligns with the Co-op's mission of fairer access to food, mental wellbeing and opportunities for young people. Co-op Membership helps support Co-op's national charity partners and Local Community Fund causes. See www.coop.co.uk/membership
