Leek readers' letters: Let's not put the clocks back this October
Thanks to Leek Nub News reader Barbara Blair for submitting this letter. Barbara has made the case for not putting the clocks back this October
Barbara said: "Dear Leek Nub News, my friend and I were talking yesterday about the clocks going back in October.
"Given the huge rises in energy costs, would it not make sense and save lots of money if we didn't do it this year?
"It would save many thousands of hours of lights being on in homes and on roads.
"It would save thousands of pounds for consumers.
"It surely could be achieved.
"Could you put this thought out there to see what other people think about the suggestion?"
The clocks are due to go back by an hour at 2am on Sunday, 31 October, which means an extra hour in bed - but why do the clocks go back?
We have been changing the clocks since the early 20th century - In the spring of 1916, during World War One, the German army turned the clocks forward as a way of conserving energy, and the UK followed suit shortly afterwards.
As a result we put the clocks back in October to return to Greenwich Mean Time after being an hour ahead throughout the summer.
However, the idea of changing the clocks twice a year is gradually becoming less popular, with some arguing that it upsets the natural rhythm of sleep, putting people more at risk of health issues.
