Tributes have been paid after a West Indies cricket legend who played at a Cheddleton Cricket Club died aged 92.
Sonny Ramadhin, a West Indian cricketer, was a legend of the game and was considered one of the most dominant bowlers of the 1950s, often being referred to as one of the greatest spinners of all time.
In 1951 he was named as one of the Cricketers of the Year, and is famed for a dominant performance in the West Indies' 1950 tour of England, helping the West Indies to register their first ever Test victory in England. He was the last surviving member of the West Indies team who played in the win.
He was also something of a local celebrity in Leek and Cheddleton, having played for Ashcombe Park Cricket Club in Cheddleton for five seasons from 1958 - 1962.
The photograph at the top of this article, kindly supplied to Leek Nub News with permission from Ashcombe Park Cricket Club, shows Sonny and the rest of the team posing for a team photo at the club's ground.
Crowds of thousands would attend the ground to watch Sonny's games, as Bob Gregory of Ashcombe Park Cricket Club explained.
He told Nub News: "The photograph was taken in 1962 in Sonny's last season at the club.
"Note the stands in the background - crowds of towards 3,000 headed to the Basford Bridge Lane Ground during his years.
"Sonny was a hugely popular player, universally known through the league, and instrumental in Ashcombe's North Staffs and District championship wins of 1959 and 1960."
