Volunteers are wanted to help cut down on the prevalence of an invasive plant in Cheddleton in an event due to take place in a few weeks.

A Himalayan balsam pull is being organised in the village on Sunday, 19th June, with the aim of getting rid of the pesky weeds in the area.

Himalayan balsam can be a major weed problem as it grows rapidly and spreads quickly, invading gardens and river banks and smothering other vegetation.

People have been invited to come along and help to pull up the invasive plant wherever they see it growing.

The event is taking place from 11am - 12.15pm and is being organised by local resident Ian Dakin.

He said: "Do you want to have fun and help our native plants?

"Then come along to the Pride in Cheddleton Himalayan Balsam pull!

"Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant that crowds out native plants like bluebells. It can also damage canal and river banks and adversely affect wildlife habitats.

"The best way to tackle it is by pulling it up, so join in with our community event.

"You'll be shown what to do on the day. Wear stout footwear, long sleeves, long trousers and gardening style gloves. Accompanied children welcome."

People who are interested in joining have been asked to meet on the grassy area next to 18 Cheddleton Park Avenue.
