Staffordshire Police are recruiting handlers for 999 calls

By Jack Lenton 4th Jun 2021

Staffordshire Police are currently recruiting for contact handlers to join the force and help members of the public in their time of need.

While contact handlers take both 101 and 999 calls, the role is more than just answering the phone. It involves collecting important and accurate information, offering advice and support while putting people at ease and keeping them calm in often difficult circumstances.

Contact Handler Sammi Clarke has worked in the control room for more than six years and says that she can really make a difference in her role.

She said: "You never know what you'll be dealing with each day, but knowing that you're there for someone, supporting them when they need it and offering them reassurance that help is on the way is so rewarding."

No two days are the same for contact handlers as they deal with a range of unpredictable situations and help to put people at ease during their moment of crisis, while gathering as much information as possible to assist them in the most appropriate way.

Dan Fletcher, who is another Contact Handler, said: "This role really gives you that sense of being able to help others and the knowledge you gain is invaluable to continue helping our communities and your police officer colleagues."

Recruitment is open until Friday, 18th June. There are 12 vacancies to join the existing team of 208 - which includes call takers, dispatchers and supervisors.

Those that would like to find out more about the role can register for one of two familiarisation events happening on Monday 7th June and Monday 14th June. Those wishing to take part in the first event have to register before the end of Sunday 6th June. Those who wish to register for the second event have to do so before the end of Sunday 13th June.

More information on the role can be found on the dedicated recruitment website here.
