Police investigating reports of man 'befriending boys and girls' in Leek town centre

Police are investigating an incident of a man in Leek town centre who appeared to be befriending young children as well as verbally abusing passing pedestrians.

The incident took place on Derby Street yesterday afternoon (Tuesday).

Officers say they will now have an increased presence in the area following the incident, and are currently carrying out enquiries.

They have asked anyone who may have any information to contact them.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police told Nub News: "Police were called to Derby Street, Leek, at 6.05pm on Tuesday (11 October) following reports of anti-social behaviour.

"A witness reported a man, in his 20s, verbally abusing women and girls and also befriending boys and girls.

"There will be an increased police presence in the area.

"Inquiries are ongoing.

"If you were in the area at the time of the incident and have any information that could help the police with their inquiries, contact us on Facebook, Twitter, or call 101, quoting incident number 612 of 11 October.

"Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
