Police arrested a man in Leek town centre on suspicion of begging in a public place yesterday (Wednesday 23rd March).

Officers say he was issued with a conditional caution.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police's Moorlands team said: "Following concerns raised by local residents, officers in Leek town centre arrested a 23-year-old man on suspicion of begging in a public place yesterday (23 March).

"He had declined offers of support and was issued with a conditional caution."

Inspector Jason Allport, deputy commander for the Staffordshire Moorlands Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "Street begging is a highly emotive and sensitive issue and we work closely with other agencies and charities to ensure people receive help and support where needed.

"But where absolutely necessary we will take positive action against people who engage in this practice, especially if it's in an aggressive manner.

"We will continue to proactively work closely with our partners to reassure the local communities that we are committed to ensuring that Leek is a safe and pleasant place to live, work and visit."
