More coronavirus testing was made available at Leek Markets following a week of surge testing in the area.

People were invited to get a PCR test at Market Place on Saturday 19 June to help identify and contain further cases of the Delta Variant of Concern following the recent outbreak in the area.

Surge testing has been taking place in Leek and Cheddleton all week with PCR tests being offered at pop-up sites or being delivered to people's homes by volunteers and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Thursday saw 656 people living in Leek West take part in doorstep testing, which continued in Cheddleton on Friday.

Cabinet Support Member for Public Health and Integrated Care, Dr. Johnny McMahon, said: "We've seen a great response to surge testing in Leek and Cheddleton this week and there is still time to get a PCR test for those who haven't had the chance yet.

"It is absolutely vital that residents take advantage of the surge testing as more people getting tested will help us better understand how this variant is spreading and give us the best chance of containing it.

"Please, if you haven't already done so this week and even if you have had your vaccine, get a PCR test to help control the virus and protect the community from further spread of infection."

Surge testing is for people without symptoms only. Anybody with symptoms should book a PCR test via the national Government website.
