A Leek chemical plant which makes vital ingredients for Covid vaccines could soon be expanded further if a new planning application is approved.
The Leek branch of Croda chemicals, which is based on Barnfield Road, have applied for permission to construct a new laboratory, office building, and parking area on their local site.
A planning statement submitted as part of the application says: "Croda Chemicals has a critical infrastructure to develop components used in Covid-19 vaccines.
"Due to the pandemic, there is a strong government directive to increase the productivity of those components.
"Although these buildings will not carry out any industrial processes, they will be crucial for the correct management of personnel and operations.
"The relocation of the current offices outside the production area will free space for utility and process plant buildings.
"The addition of a Laboratory building will help with future research and development."
We reported previously how the Leek plant was recently awarded almost £16m by the Government to increase its production capacity.
The plant produces lipids, which are used in several Covid vaccines.
We also reported how plans were previously approved to construct a large new four storey building on the same site.
