A man has been jailed for assaulting two children and a man in a property in Leek earlier this year.

James Patrick Owens, aged 29, of no fixed address, was jailed for two years and nine months at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday (7 November) after admitting assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of assault by beating, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and affray.

The court heard how Owens forced his way into a property near Ball Haye Green on 4 February this year. He used a metal pole to repeatedly strike a man on the head before assaulting two children.  

The male victim sustained cuts to his nose, swelling behind his ear and an elbow wound in the attack.

He was treated for his injuries at the scene and did not need to attend hospital.

The children were left shaken but unhurt.

Owens made off from the scene by jumping from a first floor window. He was quickly arrested and later charged before pleading guilty to the offences in court.

Detective Constable Tracy Adams, from the force's Child Protection and Exploitation Team, said: "Owens has caused significant physical injury to the male victim and caused substantial mental distress to all the victims.

"Thankfully, he has rightfully been put behind bars for his actions.

"I'd like to commend the victims for their bravery in helping us with our investigation and delivering justice against this violent offender."
