Work to refurbish the exercise track at Birchall has now been completed following a commitment by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council earlier this year.

The track, which is not a standard length or shape, is well-used by the local community but the condition of this unique facility has deteriorated over a number of years.

The surface of the track was poor and in need of full refurbishment to clear some of the vegetation, replace edging curbs and resurface it with nearly 90 tonnes of redgra aggregate.

Councillor Mark Deaville, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sports at the Council, said: "We have worked with many of our partners to create a new 'Move More' strategy for the Staffordshire Moorlands which sets outs how we will work together to enable more people to lead active lives.

"The facilities that people have access to plays a key role in encouraging activity and that's why what we provide at Birchall is so important to Leek and the surrounding area.

"We want the outdoor facilities we have in the Moorlands to be well maintained so I'm delighted that we've been able to invest in improving this exercise track. It's open to everyone and free to use and it's a lovely, safe, quiet environment to walk or run so I hope people make full use of it."

The project was delivered by the Council's partners Lex Leisure and Glendale who manage leisure centres and sports pitches across the district. An improved maintenance programme will help ensure the track stays in good condition.

The Council also worked with Staffordshire Moorlands AC who use the track on a Tuesday evening for their coaching sessions with their junior and senior members.

Further work is planned at Birchall playing fields with a perimeter pathway and outdoor fitness equipment next on the agenda.

Councillor Deaville added: "We're excited by the work which has taken place and by what is still to come. Our vision is to create Birchall Sports Village to deliver a diverse range of activities, improved facilities and greater accessibility and, by doing so, create even more opportunities for people to be active."
