Police have appealed for information after receiving reports of a man in Leek asking passing motorists for petrol money.

The man was reportedly flagging down motorists and asking for money for petrol, with police saying he even offered to follow motorists to the petrol station so they could pay.

Officers also warned that the man offered what he claimed to be gold jewellery in exchange for the money.

Police say that this may well be a scam.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police's Moorlands team said: "We have had a report of a male flagging down motorists asking for money for petrol in the Leek area.

"The driver will also offer to follow you to the filling station so you can pay or even hand over what is said to be gold jewellery until he can repay you. This may well be a scam!"
