Staff, parents and children at two Oftsed 'Outstanding' children's nurseries in Staffordshire have raised money to celebrate the example set by Captain Sir Tom Moore by taking on their own challenges.

The pair of nurseries have raised a total of £516.88 for the Captain Tom Foundation by putting their best foot forward.

In keeping with Captain Tom's original fundraising mission, which saw the war veteran walk 100 laps of his garden and raise almost £39m for the NHS, each nursery based their fundraising on the theme of 100 and stepped out in style.

The early years youngsters at Children 1st at Buckinghams in Leek walked 100 laps of the garden over the course of the week, with parents cheering them on and donating. The nursery rose to the occasion by throwing a party to celebrate, with the children creating medals, makeshift RAF planes and enjoying sandwiches and scones in the sunshine.

Taking inspiration from the Captain's fantastic achievements, Children 1st at Meir Park in Stoke-on-Trent also set up a treadmill on the nursery driveway and encouraged adults and children in the local community to get involved. The aim of the challenge was to tally up their miles and raise donations to reach their goal of 100 miles in a week before Captain Tom's 101st birthday.

The older children at Children 1st at Buckinghams also created their own pictures of what made them happy and shared their work with residents at Abbey Court, a nearby care home, hoping to bring a smile to everyone.

Commenting on the activities, Katy McBean, nursery manager at Children 1st at Meir Park said: "We are delighted to have completed our 100 miles for the Captain Tom Foundation. It was a fantastic cause to be involved in and it was great to see children and parents alike showing their outstanding support by taking part, cheering us on and donating."

"Captain Tom inspired the nation and we wanted to keep his spirit alive to inspire our youngsters and teach them about determination and community spirit."

Nicky Hardy, nursery manager at Children 1st at Buckinghams adds: "Learning about Captain Tom and taking part in this activity taught the children about kindness and helping others. We hope that the residents of Abbey Court enjoyed receiving the pictures and sharing some of the children's happiness."
