Leek's Mayor Cllr Lyn Swindlehurst has explained why she is looking forward to Christmas this year. Read her thoughts below:
Many events I'm attending currently are focused on Christmas. I think many of us are mindful of the recent past and the impact the pandemic has had on our lives and our relationships. There are those missing loved one and who have missed opportunities to get together. I attended two events recently that bought this into focus for me. An evenings entertainment provided by Wetley Rocks Male Voice Choir, who hadn't sung together for almost two years, together with Leek Musical Theatre Group, who made us laugh, sing together and amazed us with their talent. The overall feeling was joy, of being together and of celebrating what we have. The second event was a Carol singing afternoon with people challenged by Alzheimer's and carers, organised by Approach Dementia Support, Leek. We sang and played percussion together and enjoyed tea and biscuits. We shared each other's company and had fun despite our individual differences. The positive effects of singing and music on people's well-being was obvious. A surprise magical moment this week was standing with Santa, alias the Town Cryer, Bill Lomas, as children passed and were obviously so delighted with the opportunity to speak to Santa. True wonder in their eyes. Santa brings so much joy to children and families in and around Leek. Small things mean a great deal to us all. Take time to enjoy each other's company when and where you can.
