Leek: Local Paralympian wins TWELFTH Gold medal

Local News by Jack Lenton 26th Aug 2021

Messages of congratulations are already flooding in for a local Paralympian after he bagged an incredible Gold medal at the Tokyo games today.

Sir Lee Pearson, who was a student at Westwood College in Leek, took home Gold in the equestrian event with his horse Breezer in the Grade 2 section.

In an incredible career, the 47-year-old first won Paralympic Gold in Sydney over 20 years ago in 2000, and he also has Golds from every Paralympic games since - Athens, Beijing, London, Rio and now Tokyo.

This year, Lee's score of 76.265 was enough to see him finish top of the leaderboard, with Austria's Pepo Puch achieving silver and fellow GB Paralympian Georgia Wilson winning bronze.

It was also Lee's first Paralympics with his new horse, following the death of his previous horse Gentleman earlier this year.

After winning his latest Gold, Lee told Channel 4 that staying at the top for so long was "an emotional rollercoaster" but added that every medal he had achieved in his long career felt "surreal" and like "a fairytale".

Messages of congratulations are already rolling in, with Moorlands MP Karen Bradley saying: "Huge congratulations to Moorlands athlete Sir Lee Pearson CBE on his 12th Paralympic gold!"
