A defective tumble dryer caused a rural house fire in the Staffordshire Moorlands yesterday (Wednesday 25 May).

Four crews from Hanley, Leek, Biddulph and Longton were called shortly after 12.20pm to attend a property in Bradnop, Leek.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service explained how, upon arrival, crews ensured all occupants were accounted for and taken to a safe distance.

By 12.55pm, four breathing apparatus and a hose reel jet was used to successfully extinguish the fire and isolate the electric supply.

Crews then divided in order to ventilate the smoke-logged property and ensure adjoining buildings were inspected thoroughly.

Upon inspection, the cause was deemed to be accidental – as a result of a defective tumble dryer igniting.

Watch Manager Daniel Wheeler, who attended the incident, said: "Crews worked effectively to extinguish the fire and identify spread within the voids of the property.

"We advise not to leave appliances unattended when on and to have smoke alarms inspected regularly.

"If you would like dedicated advice on a range of fire safety guidelines in the home, please call 0800 0241 999."
