Local News by Jack Lenton 22nd Aug 2022

Specially trained firefighters from Leek helped to rescue a horse that became trapped in its trailer after a collision with a lorry.

The incident took place on Saturday on the A500 Barthomley near Crewe, with Romeo the pony, who is three, having to be freed by specially trained fire crews from the Staffordshire and Cheshire Fire and Rescue Services.

A crew from Leek attended the collision, as well as crews from Alsager, Lymm and Bollington.

Crews attended the incident at around 1pm on Saturday afternoon and left at 2.55pm.

Luckily Romeo was able to escape the ordeal with only a few minor cuts and bruises.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Animal rescue trained firefighters attended a road traffic collision involving a heavy goods vehicle and and a vehicle pulling a horse trailer that had left a pony stuck inside.

"Crews from Cheshire and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Services attended the scene. Specialist equipment was used by the firefighters and animal rescue team to release the pony, three year old Romeo, with a vet in attendance to ensure the pony was comfortable throughout the extrication process. Romeo was reported to be doing well after his ordeal."
