A Sixth Form leavers' event has been cancelled and more students have been put back into self-isolation as the Delta variant outbreak continues to show its effects on schools in Leek.

Leek Nub News reported previously how over 1,000 students in the town were told to self-isolate after an outbreak of the variant was linked to several Leek schools.

Cases were linked to Westwood College, Leek High School, St Edwards Middle School and most recently Westwood First School.

The outbreak has meant that a leavers' celebration event at Westwood College, due to take place on 24th June, has now been cancelled.

The school says it is hoping to organise another event later down the line if possible.

A spokesperson for the college said: "Unfortunately, in the light of increase in Covid infections locally and the ongoing uncertainty around whether restrictions will be eased after 21st June, we have had to cancel the Leavers Celebration event scheduled for 24th June.

"If we can organise something similar when the situation becomes clearer we will try to do so."

Meanwhile, Year 6 students at St Edward's Church of England Academy were told to isolate following a positive Coronavirus test in one pupil.

They must remain at home until June 22nd, with some students having only been back in school for a few days after being told to isolate due to the previous outbreak.

A spokesperson for St Edward's Academy said in a letter: "We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case in our Year 6 bubble.

"In line with the national guidance, we have been advised to close our Year 6 bubble.

"Your child should stay at home and self-isolate until Monday, June 21. If your child is well at the end of the 10-day period of isolation, then they can return to school on Tuesday, June 22."

Extra Covid-19 testing for people in Leek and Cheddleton is continuing this week, with pop ups planned taking place today (Wednesday) and Friday.

Residents of Leek and Cheddleton can get themselves tested at Brough Park Leisure Centre on Wednesday (16 June) between 2pm to 6pm.

Or they can bag themselves a test on Friday at Sainsbury's in Churnet Way, Leek, between 10am and 12noon.

Vaccines have been available in the town for over 18s over the last few days in an attempt to battle the variant, although vaccines for all adults in the UK are expected to be offered by the end of the week.
