A junior town crier competition is being considered for Leek, which could take place as soon as next year.

The idea was raised by Leek's current town crier, Bill Lomas, and would let kids have a go at delivering their best cries, with prizes on offer for the loudest ones.

Mr Lomas feels that the competition would be useful for teaching children this history of town criers and could help tourism in Leek.

Could such a unique event help to put Leek on the map?

Mr Lomas said: "For a few years,I have had the idea of organizing a Junior Town Crier competition in Leek. This could take place next year.

"It would be in a couple of groupings, boys then girls under eight and boys and girls over eight up to fourteen.

"Prizes would be given for the best in each group and the loudest.

"I know that a lot of children are interested to take part and it's a good way to tell people about the history of town criers and their evolved role in the modern world, and the role that they play in tourism.

"I have spoken to the chair of the town council events committee and he thinks that its a good idea, particularly as this is a not so common event nationally.

"I believe that every time this town puts on something new, it enhances the town and people will return to visit us here in Leek and the Staffordshire Moorlands."
