Jack Russell Terrier to be made Mayor of Leek for a day
Leek will receive a unique new mayor for one day only next month - a 15 year old Jack Russell Terrier called Grizzly.
But don't worry, the town hasn't gone completely barking mad! There is a great reason behind the decision.
The current mayor of Leek, Bill Cawley, has decided to make Grizzly the mayor on Tuesday next week (4th October).
He chose this day in particular because it is St Francis of Assisi Day - the patron saint of animals.
Cllr Cawley explained he has decided to make Grizzly mayor for the day to raise awareness of the increasing number of pet owners who are having to turn to food banks to feed their pets.
He said: "On 4th October which is St Francis of Assisi day - the patron saint of animals - I thought I would make Grizzly, a 15 year old terrier, Leek Mayor for the day to draw attention to the impact of pet owners who have to rely on food banks to feed their pet.
"Grizzly is going from a Jack to a Mayor for the day.
"A few days ago we took Mayor Grizzly on a tour of the supermarkets of Leek to drum up support.
"It was natural that we went to the Dog and Rot for a photo opportunity."
Cllr Cawley has also asked people to donate pet food to their local food banks in honour of Grizzly's campaign.
