Staffordshire Moorlands District Council says a set of garages in Leek that contain asbestos cladding can be demolished.

The council received an application by a Mr Daniel Ferns for permission to demolish a set of derelict former garages on land near Broad Street.

The garages are located near to the junction of Broad Street and Sneyd Street, just behind the Toolstation garage and the George's Tradition chip shop.

The council has since ruled that prior approval is not required for the garages to be demolished, meaning the demolition has been given the green light to go ahead.

A health and safety statement prepared as part of the application explained that the work will include the removal of asbestos roof cladding in the garages.

The statement explains in detail a range the methods that will be taken to ensure that the asbestos is removed safely.

The council ruled on Friday that prior permission is not required, meaning the work can now go ahead.
