It's election time, and candidates all over the country are battling for the public's votes ahead of the big day on May 6th.

This also goes for Leek, where two seats at Staffordshire County Council are up for grabs - one in Leek South, and one in Leek Rural.

With the election getting closer by the day, we got in touch with all seven Leek candidates to ask them to briefly explain in their own words why they think they deserve your vote.

Over the next few days, we will be posting their responses so you can read what they had to say and make your decision.

Next it's the turn of Matt Swindlehurst, who is standing in Leek Rural for the Labour Party.

He said: "I was born, and grew up, in Leek.

"I had an extensive career in health and Social Care, both as a practitioner, and an educationalist. I now live in the town close to my family. I am a Town Councillor, and currently chair of events."

My Election Pledges

"It's vital that we use our local businesses and services in overcoming the deep economic impact of the pandemic. Council contracts must reflect this.

"Two thirds of the council budget is spent on social care. I will use my experience of working in senior positions in the NHS to ensure we get proper levels of delivery.

"We owe it to future generations to do everything we can to meet the enormous challenges of global warming. I will promote local, green initiatives.

"As a former Principal Lecturer I will make sure we do everything we can to support schools and colleges in developing young people's full potential.

"We all know we live in a 'Hidden Gem' ! I will support Town and District Parishes in ensuring we do everything we can to welcome visitors to the area."
