Macclesfield Town FC have appealed for information after a flare was thrown onto the pitch during their recent away game at Leek Town.
The match on Tuesday (16th August) was Leek's first home league game of the season and a bumper crowd were present in Harrison Park.
In a close game, Macclesfield eventually came out on top, winning 3-1.
But now Macclesfield Town have appealed for information after a pyrotechnic was thrown onto the pitch during the second half.
The club says such devices can cause considerable damage to pitches - especially as Leek recently had a new artificial 3G pitch worth hundreds of thousands of pounds installed.
Macclesfield are now aiming to bring criminal charges against whoever threw the flare.
A spokesperson for the club said: "Further to Tuesday evening's game at Leek Town, we would like to appeal to our fans for information after a pyrotechnic was thrown onto the pitch during the second half.
"Not only are such devices not permitted in football stadia, they also represent a threat to the health and safety of all supporters.
"In addition, they also can cause a considerable amount of damage – especially when thrown onto an artificial pitch.
"We experienced this during our NWCFL Premier Division fixture against Avro earlier this year and are working hard with our colleagues at Leek in a bid to bring the perpetrator to justice.
"The damage to Leek's surface will cost a considerable amount of money to fix and as such, we will assist them in whatever way we can to bring criminal charges against the individual who caused it.
"If you are able to provide any information on this, please email [email protected] in the strictest confidence."
A spokesperson for Leek Town commented on social media: "[The fantastic atmosphere was] spoilt by a few mindless idiots who Macclesfield apologised for - sooner or later someone will get seriously hurt with a pyro."
