Two Leek hospitals rated 'Inadequate' for second time in six months

Two Leek hospitals that were rated 'inadequate' and placed in special measures after patients died due to Covid-19 outbreaks six months ago has again been given the same rating following a new inspection.

Inspectors at the Care Quality Commission said following their latest inspection that the two hospitals are now even worse than they were six months ago.

Leek Nub News reported back in April how the Care Quality Commission gave 'inadequate' ratings to the John Munroe Hospital and the Edith Shaw Hospital - both of which are mental health hospitals - after whistleblowers came forward with concerns.

Now, a new inspection has found that the quality of care has further worsened since then, although it did acknowledge that measures to stop the spread of infections have improved.

Among many other concerns, the inspection found that staff at the hospitals were using disproportionate force with patients, including "staff surrounding a patient's chair, pointing fingers at patients and pushing patients in their back".

It also found that "medication was not always stored at the recommended temperature" and that "waste continued to not be disposed of appropriately".

Another inspection will be carried out in another six months, and if conditions still do not improve the Care Quality Commission has said it will use enforcement actions, which could lead to the closure of the hospitals as a last resort.

The John Munroe hospital can house up to 57 men and women while the Edith Shaw hospital is suitable for up to 14 women over the age of 55.

The John Monroe Group, which manages both hospitals, said it was disappointed with the inspection's outcome but reassured that work is being undertaken to ensure the safety of patients.

The full inspections are available to read on the Care Quality Commission website.
