A petition calling for a 20mph speed limit and safer pedestrian crossings in Leek town centre was presented to county councillors today (Thursday 14th October).

Staffordshire County Council received the petition, which amassed over 1,000 signatures, at a meeting this morning.

The petition was set up by Leek resident Roger Warrillow, and presented to councillors on his behalf by Labour Cllr Charlotte Atkins, who represents the Leek South ward.

She said: "I'm presenting this petition on behalf of over 1,000 Leek residents who don't feel safe in the town centre.

"They're calling for a 20mph speed limit and safe crossings.

"There's an urgent need for better pedestrian safety measures in Leek.

"Crossings have been promised but not yet delivered.

"There are existing plans to improve St Edward Street, but no start date, and residents are getting impatient about facilities to improve their safety.

"I'm hoping this petition will push those plans along."

The petition was received by the council but was not discussed any further.
