Leek United Building Society has applied for planning permission to install bigger signs on its shop front in the town.

The Derby Street building society submitted an advertisement consent application to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council this week.

The local building society wants to upgrade its signage to stretch all the way across its shop front, with the current signage only taking up around half of the space available.

A statement submitted as part of the application reads: "We are looking to swap the sign and bus-stop of the branch for a new/cleaner looking alternative. Having taken into consideration the conversation area, we will be changing these items on a like-for-like basis; keeping the colours and wording the same.

"Having assessed our neighbours on Derby Street, we are looking to improve on the image on the store. To do this we have taken into consideration neighbours such as NatWest with their internally illuminated sign, but wanting to get an image closer to stores like TUI which have maintained conservation signage, such as the traditional hanging sign.

"We would like to add internal illumination to the signage lettering and bus-stop lettering which will only be on between 8am – 6:30pm and will be a dim light that will only be seen on darker days/early evening, not to affect the fact it is a conservational area.

"With this in mind, we will be maintaining the traditional feature on the hanging bus stop sign to be in-keeping with the appearance of the town and our neighbours."

The district council will have the final say on the application at a later date.
